On the concrete edge at the bottom of the gravestones, the following text can be read:
The residents of Othene honor the dead by war
their lives to Othene Sept. 20. 1944
Ps.103: 15a The days of man as the grass.

On September 20, 1944, the following happened in Othene (now a district of Terneuzen):
Due to an impending allied force majeure, German soldiers fled by boat over the Westerschelde, leaving their vehicles behind. A few residents went to these vehicles. The vehicles and the people around them were noticed from an allied plane. The crew thought the people were Germans, and hit the vehicles and the people with bombs.
