Returning from a bombing at the industrial area of Bochum (part of a fleet of 446 bombers) the 4-engined Halifax bomber English II B (JB 892 KN-E, part of the 77th Squadron) crashed in the night of May 14, 1943 at 2.30 pm near Sleen. The bomber was hit by a German fighter near Emmen.
The memorial commemorates the 7 crew members, which were buried at the general cemetery in Sleen.
A group of students of Zweeloo and Oosterhesselen established a monument by the founded plane parts of the Halifax in 1945.
On April 28, 1988 this memorial was adopted by initiated of the "Stichting February'41" by group 7 of the Christian school "The Fountain" in Sleen.
