Commonwealth War Cemetery Poelcapelle

This cemetery was created after the end of the war and Commonwealth burials from the following previous locations have been brought here:
• HOUTHULST FOREST NEW MILITARY CEMETERY, LANGEMARCK: 21 soldiers dated to 1914 and 1915.
• KEERSELAERE FRENCH CEMETERY, LANGEMARCK: 7 Soldiers who were POW of the Germans, 5 Canadians and 2 British dated 1915.
• PILCKEM ROAD GERMAN CEMETERY, LANGEMARCK: 13 British and 1 Canadian soldier buried by the enemy between the period of 1914 – 1917.
• POELCAPELLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY: 1 soldier from UK from 1915.
• POELCAPELLE GERMAN CEMETERY No.2: 96 Soldiers from the UK and Canada dated from 1914 – 1915.
• ST. JEAN CHURCHYARD: 44 British soldiers, however this Churchyard was completely destroyed.
• STADEN FRENCH MILITARY CEMETERY: 1 R.A.F.
• VIJFWEGEN GERMAN CEMETERY No.1: 3 Soldiers buried by the Germans from the UK.

The remainder was coming from the battlefield in this area and may also explain why there are so many unknown soldiers here, as 6230 of the soldiers here are unknown out of the 7479.
There is 1 victim of the Second World War burried here as well.

In this cemetery is Private John Condon (LVI. F. 8.) of the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment he is the youngest victim of the First World War, he was only 14 years old.
Next to him is Private Thomas Carthy (LV. F. 7.) He was the oldest victim of the Royal Irish Regiment at 47 years old.
