Commonwealth War Cemetery Poperinghe New

The Poperinge New Military Cemetery contains 677 Commonwealth war graves from the First World War. There are also 274 for people of other nationalities including 271 French, 2 Belgian nuns/nurses and 1 German.

As Poperinge was the site of the court martial, the left-hand flowerbed of the British section contains the graves of 17 "Shot by Dawn casualties" including that of 2nd Lieutenant Eric Poole, 31, of the 11th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, Prince of Wales Own. Executed for desertion on 10 Dec 1916 in the courtyard of Poperinge town hall. Perk II - Row A 11 He was the first of 3 officers executed during World War I.

This cemetery was opened in July 1915. Initially for the Casualty Clearing Stations stationed at Poperinge and from 1916 for the Field Ambulance Units
