In 1918 the Germans decided on the forced evacuation of the civilian population of Northern France.
Some 30,000 evacuees arrived at Jodoigne between October 10 and November 2, 1918. Dozens of French people of all ages died here in the hospital, hospice or in private homes.
In the municipal cemetery of Jodoigne, modest wooden crosses remind of the miserable fate of these refugees.
