War Memorial Ghent "Rijkshogere Technische en Handelsschool"

This memorial commemorates the former students of this Technical School (Rijkshogere Technische en Handelsschool) who were killed or missing in World War I.

The monument is located in the courtyard of the former Sint-Agneteklooster, later redesignated as a Nijverheidsschool.

It was unveiled in 1923 as a tribute to the fallen and claimed pupils, former pupils and teachers of the former Nijverheidsschool, later the Royal Technical Athenaeum of Ghent.
After the Second World War, it was also dedicated to the civilian victims associated with the school.

The monument is beautifully worked out in bluestone with an aesthetically beautiful figurative bronze statue designed by the Ghent sculptor Louis Dubar.
The bluestone sculpture is three meters high, composed of two connected pillars, a text plate, two swords with half laurel wreaths and the Belgian coat of arms.
The bronze figurative statue is a seated youth or apprentice with a flower garland on his knees. He sits quietly and serenely and symbolizes grief and sorrow for the fellow students who lost their lives for the fatherland.
