Memorial Dover Patrol Cap Blanc Nez

The Dover Patrol Memorial on Cap Blanc Nez in Sangatte is a memorial to Dover Patrol for their work during the First World War.

During the First World War, the Pas-de-Calais Strait was a very important route between two allied states, namely France and the United Kingdom. A Franco-British naval unit, mostly made up of sailors from English ships, was formed to ensure the safety of the passage and to avoid German attacks. As most of the ships were based in Dover, the unit was renamed Dover Patrol. Attacks by German ships and drift mines laid by the Germans killed more than 2,000 members of the Dover Patrol.

In 1922, two monuments honoring Dover Patrol were erected in France and in England. The French copy was blown up by the Germans on July 7, 1944. A new obelisk was erected in 1962 and renewed in 2007.

On the obelisk is a plaque honoring the French sailors who were enlisted in the "Patrol of Dover" and lost their lives in battle. There is also an information board with background information and various photos.
