Text on the monument:
‘In memory of the residents of the municipality of Heumen who fell in war in foreign lands’.
The name on a small plaque of one of the victims reads: Willem van Hest.
Willem van Hest was born on 8 April 1928 in Heumen. He was a soldier and was part of 402 Battalion Infantry, which was part of the 41st Independent Infantry Brigade (called F-Brigade in the East Indies). On 14 May 1949, Van Hest was killed in Munggur by a shot from a fleeing opponent. He is buried on the Dutch Field of Honour Candi near the Javanese town of Semarang. The erection of the monument was at the initiative of some East Indies veterans.
The monument was unveiled on 6 September 2010 by 86-year-old veteran Henk Voss and Willem van Hest's 12-year-old second cousin Wilco and consecrated by Malden-based pastor Sip. This took place in the presence of mayor Jan van Zomeren, former East Indies veterans, family members and interested parties.
