Text on the monument:
In memory of our comrades
In May 1940 and beyond
here and overseas
who gave their lives for the Fatherland
During the mobilization of 1939-1940, the Grenadiers and Jagers played an important role. In the May Days of 1940, the regiment fought heavy fighting against the German occupiers in the Hague region and during the recapture of the airfields Ypenburg and Ockenburg. During this battle, no less than 208 soldiers of the Grenadiers and Hunters died. Thanks to the courageous action in the May Days of 1940, Queen Wilhelmina was able to flee to London.
On October 6, 1951, the monument 'Grenadiers and Hunters' by sculptor Dirk Bus was unveiled on Hofweg. The statue was a gift from the inhabitants of The Hague to the soldiers in the service of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in gratitude for their actions during the war years. In 1964 the sculpture was moved to the Johan de Wittlaan. On May 10, 2010 it was given a new and rightful place on the Böttgerwater in Ypenburg.
The Böttgerwater is named after Captain Wilhelm Böttger, the intrepid commander of the 3rd Company of Grenadiers.
