Fortress Metz - Fort "Verdun"

This German fort was built from 1899 to 1905. It fired on French positions during the First World War and served as shelter for German troops marching towards Verdun. It was abandoned by the French army in June 1940 and it saw heavy fighting in 1944, after the U.S. Army launched an offensive against the German troops in and around Metz.
