Next to Norwich Cathedral is the grave of Edith Cavell. On a nearby plaque attached to the cathedral's wall, her story is written:
EDITH CAVELL WAS BORN AT CAVELL HOUSE SWARDESTON NORWICH ON DECEMBER 4 1965. AS MATRON OF A HOSPITAL IN BRUSSELS SHE TENDED WITH GREAT DEVOTION THE WOUNDED OF ENEMY AND ALLIED FORCES ALIKE. FOR HELPING MANY OF OUR MEN ESCAPE SHE WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH AND WAS SHOT ON OCTOBER 12 1915.
The Cross previously placed on the grave was replaced with a Headstone and Cover Plate around 2020.
Edith Cavell's body was repatriated from Belgium aboard HMS Rowena arriving at Dover on 14 May 1919. Her coffin was then place in Van 132 (Cavell Van for transportation to London where she was given a State funeral in Westminster Abbey before being moved to Norwich
