In Hersbruck, an satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp was located. About 10,000 people were imprisoned here and used as slave labour. Behind Dachau and Flossenbürg, Hersbruck was the third biggers concentration camp in southern Germany. It started in May 1944 and during the short time the camp existed, about 4000 prisoners died.
The memorial is located where about 1000 victims were cremated in open air because the crematorium could not handle the large number of victims.
