This memorial commemorates 11 people, including 2 unknowns, who were hanged/ executed by the Germans near this location on August 6th and 7th, 1914.
Among those hanged was former professional cyclist Marcel Kerff from the nearby village of 's-Gravenvoeren (Fouron-le-Comte). The photograph, posted on his 105th death anniversary in 2019 by local cycling clubs, mentions that at the 1st Tour de France in 1903, he finished 6th.
The original monument was destroyed by the Nazis in 1942. A new monument was erected in 1946.
