Royallieu was one of Nazi Germany's largest transit camps in occupied France. More than 53,000 resistance fighters, Jews and hostages were held here, most of whom were deported from here to concentration camps and extermination camps in the east. The camp was in operation between June 1941 and August 1944.
Inside Royallieu was located the "Camp C", or "Jewish camp". This part of Royallieu was an extermination camp in itself, as Jewish prisoners were widely starved.
The camp today:
A museum has stood there since 2008, where one can visit a documentation centre and some of the original camp buildings. Also on display are the remains of a 48-metre-long tunnel through which 19 people were able to escape from the camp in 1942.
For current visiting hours, please visit the website of the museum.
