Museum KZ Sonnenburg

KZ Sonnenburg was a German concentration camp that stood here from 1933 to 1945. It was liberated by the Red Army in March 1945. A museum dedicated to the camp victims is standing here these days.

KZ Sonnenburg was a labor camp. A part of the old camp complex, consisting of workshops, roofs, concrete paving and some buildings, is for sale at the time of visit (Sept. 2019). Outside the camp complex, in front of the old concentration camp, there is a fairly new museum. Various commemorative plaques have been mounted on the outside of the museum.

The camp complex is accessible, but only after visiting this museum. The original concrete posts with barbed wire are still present to a large extent. There is also a building on the camp complex where executions took place at a side wall. On the outside, to the left of the old camp complex, there is now a prison for Polish criminals. To the right of the camp there is now a car scrap yard, which uses the old camp fence.

Check the site for opening times. Although not necessary, it is advisable to call in advance if the museum is open. Due to the limited number of visitors, no one is sometimes present. The managers live in the village. Polish, German and English are spoken here.

Assessment: medium (max. Visiting time = 1.5 hours)

For current visiting hours, please visit the website of the museum.
