Statue of Piet van de Velde from 1943 - 1945, medical director of the Bethesda Hospital. Piet van de Velde gave many Jews and others a safe hiding place in the hospital. Under his leadership, the Hospital played a major role in helping the persecuted. Piet van de Velde left these people to nurse on the ward for infectious diseases. Almost cured patients he guided to safe addresses. By faking sick to falsify reports and x-rays he gave victory dozen men for deportation. Piet van de Velde had to pay for his opposition activities end with death. He was on March 8, 1945 with 116 others executed without trial at Woeste Hoeve. This monument is not only a tribute to Piet van de Velde, but also to the helpful staff at the hospital war years.
