The Dutch group shelters, part of the Stelling van Amsterdam (Defence Line of Amsterdam, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site), were designed as a shelter by shelling and bombing, if the trenches between the shelters did not give not enough coverage.
The shelters were built during World War I. There were several different types. The shelters were built as an extra defense line between both forts in Spaarndam.
