This memorial commemorates the residents of Esse who were killed or missing in the Great War (World War I) and World War II.
This was the brainchild of an artist resident in Esse in 1919. He clearly understood the significance of the Sully secular tree of peace at the back of the memorial. The statue is of a dead poilu lying on the bench (already in position as Sully trees were meeting places). The 1919 plaque explains a lot of this (bottom right of picture). This is a sensitive memorial - sad memories in the long history of a people - not a celebration.
