This memorial on the grass to the east of the cathedral was erected on September 20, 1984, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Malmedy on September 11, 1944. It is an initiative of the local associations of veterans and war invalids. The monument lists the American army units that took part in the liberation. 150 war veterans had come over for the ceremony. It was remarkable that apart from the presence of delegations from the municipal council, patriotic associations and municipal schools, the interest of the inhabitants of Malmedy was minimal.
The monument is a five-ton boulder from the 'Nelles' quarries. The sculptors A. Gabriel applied the three hundred bronze letters.
