War Memorial Cemetery Theux

This monument in Theux cemetery commemorates 22 soldiers from Theux who died or went missing in World War I.

Commemorated are;

BERTRAND Charles, age 21, war volunteer, private with the 11th regiment, 3rd company Carabiniers, killed northeast of Het Wieltje (Boezinghe), West Flanders on September 28th, 1918.

DECHENEUX Adolphe, age 27 old, private with the 1st regiment Caribinier-wheelers, killed on October 16th, 1918 at Lichtervelde (West Flanders), by shrapnel in the head. Distinguished with the Knight's Cross with palm in the Order of Léopold II, the War Cross with palm and 7 front stripes for service at the front.

DENAYE Jospeh, age 31, war volunteer, private in the 13th Line Regiment, killed on May 5th, 1916 near Diksmuide (West Flanders) by a bullet in the head.

FRANKENNE Adelin, age 22, soldier with the 7th line regiment, died in the hospital in Calais (France) from wounds received.

GOBIET Zéphirin, age 35, war volunteer, brigadier with the 10 artillery regiment, killed on the day before the armistice ! November 10th, 1918 at Zwijnaarde (East Flanders) at the battle of the Leie and the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal.

HANLET Adam, age 23, war volunteer, soldier with the 3rd regiment heavy artillery, died as a result of illness (probably Spanish flu) in the hospital of Adinkerke (West Flanders) on September 30th, 1918. Brother of Hanlet Henri.

HANLET Henri, age 28, war volunteer, soldier with the 3rd regiment heavy artillery, died as a result of illness (probably Spanish flu) in the hospital of Adinkerke (West Flanders) on September 15,th 1918. Brother of Hanlet Adam.

HERTAY Leon, age 21, private with the 12th linieregiment, killed on October 20th, 1914 at Diksmuide (West-Flanders).

DUSSART Jules, age 31, private with the 2nd regiment of Guides, died on November 1st, 1918 at Campagne-lès-Guines (France).

HERVE Leon, age 20, sergeant with the 9th line regiment, killed on August 19th, 1914 at Aarschot (Flemish Brabant).

JASPAR Alexandre, age 25, soldier with the 2nd Regiment of Guides, died of contracted tuberculosis at Theux on November 27th, 1914.






LAMBERT Joseph, age 31, chaplain with the 3rd Artillery Regiment, admitted to the insane asylum of Saint Pons (France) and died there on March 18th, 1919. He probably suffered shellshock from the omnipresent death, wounded, screeching men and horses, drum fire and gas attacks during the battle and was therefore admitted to the asylum of Saint Pons.

GILLON Joseph, no further details known.

LEBRUN Georges, age 41, war volunteer, soldier with the 1st caribiniers regiment, killed October 26th, 1914 at Stuivekenskerke (West Flanders), he is still missing.

LENTZ Fernand, 18 years old !, war volunteer, sergeant with the 3rd regiment jagers on foot, died May 29th, 1915 at Fortem (West Flanders) from wounds received .

MONVILLE Henri, age 33, brigadier with the garrison of Fort Barchon, killed at Barchon during the 1st days of war on August 5th, 1914. He is also commemorated on the monument to fort Barchon. (photo 2).

QUARE Jacques, age 24, soldier with the 12th line regiment, killed June 9th, 1915 at Oostkerke (West Flanders).

SIMAR Emile, age 20, private with the 12th line regiment, killed in action on October 30th, 1914 at Pervijze (West Flanders).

TIHON Jules, age 23, 2nd captain in the 2nd grenadier regiment, died as a result of shrapnel to the heart at Paschendale on October 1st, 1918. Distinguished with the Knighthood in the Order of King Leopold, the War Cross, the Iron Medal, the Commemorative Medal, and posthumously with the Victory Medal.

WARNOTTE Robert, age 27, brigadier in the artillery of the garrison of Liège, the R.F.L., Regiment Fortifiée de Liège, died September 17th, 1914 from wounds received.

WAYAFFE Célistin, age 32 , war volunteer, soldier with the "field railroads," died of wounds in the ambulance on October 18th, 1918 at De Panne (West Flanders).

DEMAZURE Edouard, age 34, soldier with the 1st carabiniers regiment, killed October 14th, 1918 at Rumbeke (West Flanders).

A memorial plaque was also placed for veteran BRAIBANT René who died in 1987 at the age of 104 !
