This building housed the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity and Eugenics (Kaiser Wilhelm Institut für Anthropologie, Menschliche Erblehre und Eugenik) from 1927 to 1945. From 1927 to 1942, Eugen Fischer was the director of this institute. He was succeeded by Otmar von Verschuer. The institute provided scientific justification for the Nazis' criminal policies on race and health. Among other things, it advocated the compulsory sterilization of hereditarily diseased Germans. Josef Mengele, camp doctor at Auschwitz, was an assistant to Verschuer.
