During World War II, hundreds of Jews and other citizens of Budapest were shot on the Danube Promenade while facing the river. Then they fell into the river. This appealing monument commemorates them.
The monument has a length of 40 meters and there are 60 pairs of metal shoes on the edge of the quay.
The Jewish people were killed by the Arrow Cross during the pogroms. The Arrow Cross Party was a movement sympathizing with Nazi Germany in World War II.
The Jewish people were forced to take off their shoes and stand on the edge facing the water. After this they were shot and fell headfirst into the river and were carried away by the current.
The memorial was created by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer and was unveiled in 2005.
