Camp Hale

Camp Hale was the home of the 10th Mountain Division, an unit of 15,000 men (1942-44). The 99th Infantry Battalion (1942-43) comprised of Norwegian and Norwegian Americans also trained here in mountaineering and skiing techniques during WWII.

The 10th saw combat in Italy in 1945, the 99th in Northern Europe and welcomed the Norwegian Royal Family home to Oslo Norway in June of 1945.

The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) recruited its Norwegian Operational Group from soldiers of the 99th Infantry in 1943. These OSS men jumped into France, Norway and some went on to operations in China against the Japanese.

There are interpretive signs along US Rt. 24, explaining the history and accomplishments of Camp Hale. Check out the Tennessee Pass Monument to these units 5 miles south on Highway 24.
