Memorial Window Aalten

The memorial window in the Oosterkerk in Aalten is a reminder for the residents of Aalten of the Second World War and the reconstruction.

The monument was erected in memory of the help that the Aalten population provided to children, Jews, people in hiding and those suffering from hunger. In July 1940, a first group of 23 children from Rotterdam came to the Achterhoek. They had experienced the bombing of their city and were able to relax for a few weeks with foster families in Aalten. In total, approximately 800 children have been temporarily in the Achterhoek. Not much later, people in hiding were also housed. During the food shortage, the Aalten population also sent foodstuffs to Rotterdam, Amsterdam and other cities.
The monument was unveiled on July 13, 1946.
