War Memorial Ureterp

The war memorial in Ureterp was erected in memory of four victims of a shooting at Café Gorter on April 14, 1945.

The names of the victims are:
The soldiers Jan L. van den Broek, Aalzen de Jager, C. Tump and a boy, the son of C. Hempenius. The three soldiers were buried with military honors on April 18, 1945.

The monument was erected by the Local Interest Association in Ureterp, on the occasion of the fiftieth commemoration of the Second World War.

The memorial tree was planted on May 5, 1947. This was reported in the local newspaper: 'Today, Monday May 5, 1947 in the evening, half past seven, two years after the liberation of the Netherlands from the grip of German domination and the national socialism - a tree was planted in front of H Gorter's house (betula pendula yuongie). This tree serves as a reminder of this great event. While the national anthems were played, the Dutch, Canadian and Frisian flags were successively hoisted. After this, the choir "Us sjongen" sang the song "Eendracht" and while playing the song: Will you step today (sung by the choir: Praise the Lord), six people came forward to jointly plant this tree.'
The plaque was unveiled on April 14, 1995.
