This Memorial, in the Academy Building of the University, commemorates prof. mr. R. P. Cleveringa. On 26 November 1940 he gave a fiery speech against the dismissal of his Jewish colleague E.M. Meijers at the University of Leiden. His speech led to a student strike and later to the closure of the University.
Prof. mr. R. P. Cleveringaplaats was imprisoned twice for longer than a half year in World War II.
