Fotress Modlin - Fort I Zakroczym

This fort, built in 1883 to 1888 was part of the Modlin fortress. It was modernised in the period 1912-1914 and saw action during the First World War.

It was a place of fierce fighting during the German invasion of Poland. Several attacks by the SS armoured "Kempf" division were repulsed by the Polish garrison. As a result, 400 Polish POW's and 100 civilians were executed on September 29th 1939.

In 1944, fortress I Modlin was reused as an internment and transit camp for 30.000 Warsaw insurgents.

The fort today:
It is currently the headquarters of a local catering company.
