Memorial 16th Infantry Regiment Stoutenburg

Plaque 16th Infantry Regiment. It commemorates the mobilization in 1939 and World War II.

During the mobilization, soldiers of the 16th infantry regiment were stationed in Stoutenburg, Asschat and Hamersveld. In Stoutenburg there were outposts consisting of trenches, where both light and heavy machine guns were deployed. In addition, the outposts in Stoutenburg had a "Battery 6 field". These were four pieces of obsolete infantry guns from the eighties of the nineteenth century. The outposts were in a meadow between the Hessenweg near the farm 't Kwade Gat and Stoutenburg castle, exactly between Stoutenburgerlaan and Emelaarseweg. The positions were shot at by the Germans at around 4:00 am on May 12, 1940. On May 12, 1940, around 6:00 PM, the message came that the outposts Stoutenberg and Asschot had to be abandoned and that the troops had to withdraw to fortress Holland.
Stoutenburg castle was the headquarters of the Germans in Amerfoort until 1944.
