Memorial "The Child Is Still There"

Memorial 'The child is still there' in Echten is a tribute to the foster parents in Friesland who offered hundreds of Jewish children a secure shelter during the Second World War. On April 17, 1945 Lemmer and surroundings were freed. For many of these children followed the liberation no reunification with the parents, because they were killed. In a number of cases the foster parents become the official parents.
The monument was created on the initiative of the then 76-year-old Loek Groenteman from Amsterdam. He was from 1943 until the liberation in 1945 as a foster child into the family of Siemen and Hielkje Visser in Echten. A few months after the liberation also his parents and brother where found and have survived the war.
