Maginot Line - Ouvrage Four à Chaux

The Maginot Line's Four à Chaux fortress was a component of the Secteur Fortifié des Vosges.

The garrison consisted of 447 soldiers, 78 NCO's and 26 officers from the 165rd RIF (Fortress Infantry Regiment). After heavy bombing and shelling by Stuka's and artillery, Four à Chaux capitulated on 1 July 1940.

Block 1 was destroyed by German soldiers in 1944.

The fort today:
Four à Chaux is currently a museum. A plaque in memory of the defenders as well as the attackers, is near the entrance.
