This French assembly cemetery was established between 1958 and 1960 for the fallen from the battles of 15-16 June 1940 (The Battle of the Rhine) and from 1 October 1944 to 9 February 1945 (Liberation of the Alsace).
The remains came from makeshift cemeteries in the departments of Mosselle, Vosges, Bas-Rhin and Territoire de Belfort.
It currently contains 2,278 fallen soldiers of whom 1,768 are from the 2nd World War, in addition there lie 8 deportees, 17 from the compulsory labour service (STO)
and 65 prisoners of war including 11 Poles.
Finally, 510 French soldiers killed in action in World War I were brought here.
Next to this cemetery there is the German cemetery with 868 fallen soldiers from World War I.
