Memorial Executions Saint-Amand-Montrond

In the centre of Saint-Amand-Montrond against a wall a war memorial is located with the following text in French:

"Ici le 8 juin 1944 ont été fusilles nos compatriotes. La douceur de vivre, la douleur de savoir. Que nos frères sont morts pour que nous vivons libres."

Translated:

"At this point on the 8th of June 1944 our compatriots were executed by firing squad. The sweetness of live, the grief of the knowledge that our brothers are killed so that we can live in peace."

Part of the memorial is also a monument that was founded thirty years after the liberation of the German concentration camps. Further there are plaques on the wall with the names of Jews civilians who became victims of the Nazi’s. 71 Jews from the city were arrested by the Gestapo in the night of 21-22 July 1944. 36 of them were thrown alive by the SS in the wells of Guerry, approximately 30 kilometres away, on 24 July and 8 August 1944 and died.
