This memorial 'The Good Shepherd' commemorates the residents of 's-Heerenberg who were killed in World War II. Amongst them were 25 Jewish victims.
The bronze statue was designed by Herman van Remmen and depicts a shepherd taking care of a lamb. Behind the statue is a memorial wall with the names of the war victims of 's Heerenberg.
This monument was intended for the victims of the war, but especially for pastor Johannes IJsbrands Galama and chaplain Marinus Adrianus van Rooijen. Because of their disapproving attitude towards the occupier, they were arrested in 1941, together with chaplain Reinier Hegge. With a letter they had distributed, the bishops wanted to protest against the German measures that strengthened the NSB's grip on daily life. The three clergymen were sent to concentration camps from which they did not return. Chaplain Hegge survived and returned to the Netherlands after the war.
