The Douamont fort was built in the 19th century as a part of the Verdun fortified defence sector.
During the First World War, approximately 100.000 soldiers died here.
In June 1940, Fort Douaumont fell to the Germans after a brief battle. Shortly before the German capture the 155mm armoured turret was sabotaged by the French garrison.
