This memorial is dedicated to the Battle of Butte de Warlencourt in 1916. The battle was won by the Germans.
German troops built deep trenches in the Butte and surrounded it with several barbed wire barriers, making it a formidable line of defense. The view from the Butte dominated the new British front line and was used by the Germans for artillery observation.
From October 1-20, 1916, the Butte de Warlencourt was the subject of several attacks by the British Army, which were costly failures. Attacks in November were also repulsed. An Australian division occupied the Butte on February 24, 1917, during the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line. The Butte was recaptured by the Germans on March 24, 1918. On August 26, 1918, the Butte was recaptured for the last time by a British division.
The visit to this Butte is not without danger. It is advised to stay on the constructed walkway because there are still many unexploded shells in the area.
