Before the war, this French battery site originally included four 164,7 mm artillery pieces.
The battery was reactivated by the Germans in 1940 and modernised between 1942-43 by the Todt organisation.
The German "Holtzendorf" coastal battery's role was to protect the western entrance of the Goulet of Brest against enemy attacks. The armanant of the German fortification comprised four 150mm Krupp guns.
