Kvarven Fort

The Kvarven fortress (1895-1902) was built on high cliffs to defend the harbour of Bergen.

a During Operation Weserubung (1940) it played major role in the defence of Norway. The Kvarven batteries knocked out the "Bremen" and "Carl Peters" warships and then duelled with the light cruiser "Königsberg".

Although the cruiser was heavily damaged, it didn't sink due to its own defensive fire power and great technical difficulties at the fort.

Kvarven capitulated at about 7.00 am after a short skirmish between German land forces and the garrison.

During the occupation (1940-1945) the fort was extended and modernised as part of the Atlantikwall.

It is currently open to the public.
