American Wooden House 1922

After the ravages of 1914 – 1918 begins a period of reconstruction. Early primitive huts, of the postwar years, are replaced by more beautiful and comfortable shelters. This authentic wooden American house was built in 1922 in Wevelgem by the Plets family. It is one of the many types of barrack contructed in Flanders. It is made of pine wood which is not supposed to be durable. Nevertheless, many could withstand the test of time. Senior Joseph Plets lived in the building until 1978. In 2013, the Memorial Museum brings the heritage building to Zonnebeke. It is rebuilt and restored in its original condition. The façade and front room, which were lost by bombing during World War ll, were carefully reconstructed.
