Battery Ernst was a part of Fort Worden, which was part of the harbor defense of Puget Sound and was built from 1899 to 1901. It was equipped with eight 12" mortars. In 1918, two mortars were transferred to the European front. The battery was operational until 1944.
Nowadays the battery is part of the Fort Worden State Park and can be visited.
