The Belgian paratrooper Sergeant Jan Melsens was dropped, together with others, near Linde on 6 September 1944 as part of the operation "Caliban".
On 10 September he discovered a German artillery-unit which causes great danger to the British troops in the neighbourhood. Immediately he started a fight and the next day he was missing.
His body was found the next day. He had shot all his ammunition and because of his sacrifice he forced the Germans to retreat.
The grave of Jan Melsens is located in the parc behind the church.
