This memorial commemorates the residents of Dorsten who were killed or missing in the Great War (World War I).
In 1925, according to plans by the Düsseldorf architect Kreis and the Dorsten-born garden architect Buerbaum, the city erected a war memorial for the dead of the First World War in the city wall tower on the west moat, to which the bronze plaques designed by Tisa von der Schulenburg were added on the wall after the Second World War.
