After the churches in Rotterdam, Nijmegen and The Hague’s ‘Bezuidenhout’ also the Nieuwe Kerk in Middelburg will receive the Cross of Nails.
Churches in which this symbol of reconciliation and peace has been placed are renown to be connected to the cathedral of Coventry, the English city that was ruined by a German bomb raid in November 1940. The cross, shaped by three large medieval nails bound together, has become a symbol for reconciliation and peace. From Coventry a relation was sought with destroyed German cities like Dresden and Berlin. In the meantime over 160 Crosses of Nails have been erected all over the world. On Sunday, May 17th, 2009, exactly 69 years after the Nieuwe Kerk and a large proportion of its centre in Middelburg was lost in war violence, the Cross was placed during a service. Present were the Dean of Coventry, David Porter and the chairman of the Dutch Coventry council, vicar Kuipers.
