Memorial 90th US Infantry Division

This memorial in Le Plessis-Lastelle commemorates the the battle of Beaucoudray hill. It took until July 12th for the 90th US Infantry Division to reach Le Plessis-Lastelle at enormous cost to both armies.

This monument marks also the location of Cos I & L, 3rd Bn, 90th Division were surrounded on July 6, 1944. Repeated attempts to reach the cutoff soldiers failed and late on July 7, the position was overrun and almost the entire command was either killed or captured. The Germans pulled out of the position on July 10. 1Lt John T. Williams was leading a nine-man patrol from the pocket the night on July 6 when they were ambushed. He and another soldier were the only two to survive. He hid out behind the lines for two days before being captured. He spent the remainder of the war in a POW camp (Oflag 64) in Poland.
