War Memorial N.H. Kerk

The war memorial in Haule was erected in memory of five Haulen residents and an allied pilot who died during wartime actions during the Second World War and in the Indonesian Independence War in the former Dutch East Indies.

The names of the six victims are:
Richard L. Grow, Andries Hartholt, Tjeerd de Jong, Hette Stelma, Jan Terpstra and Egbert de Weerd.

American pilot Richard Grow was killed on December 22, 1943 when his Thunderbolt P-47D was shot down near Haule during a firefight with a German Messerschmitt. The Thunderbolt of the 487th Fighter Squadron crashed into a potato pit in Jan Heida's orchard on Hoofdweg.

Andries Hartholt was born in Haule. Later he lived in Marum. In May 1943 a milk strike broke out. The Frisian farmers refused to supply milk to the occupier any longer. The 63-year-old Andries Hartholt was shot on May 3, 1943 as a reprisal for the strike in Trimunt, together with fourteen others, including his sons Dirk, Albert and Hendrik. This despite the fact that they had nothing to do with it.

Hette Stelma was killed on October 29, 1944 during a raid near Haulertil. De Haulenaar cycled towards Oosterwolde, when the occupier invaded resistance member Kees Hofstra. Stelma tried to escape but was fatally hit by a bullet.

During the razzia of 29 October 1944, Jan Terpstra visited resistance fighter Hofstra. He was arrested and taken to a labor camp in Wöbelin, Germany. There Jan Terpstra died of exhaustion on May 2, 1945.
