On 23 March 1944, an bomb-attack took place in Rome on German and Italian troops. Dozens of people were killed. As al reprisal-measurement, 335 people were shot in the caves of Fosse Ardeatine. After that, parts of the cave were blown up.
Amongst the 335 victims were Jews and political prisoners, but also people who were taken from the street or out their houses. Nowadays the cave is a national memorial.
