In reprisal of the local support given to the partisans, between 29 September and 5 October 1944, soldiers of the 16th SS Panzergrenadier Division Reichsführer-SS, systematically killed hundreds of people in Marzabotto and in the surrounding villages.
Some confusion regarding the number of victims arose during the years: some sources report up to 1,830 victims. The official report written the SS mention 728 victims.
Among the victims, 45 were less than 2-years-old, 110 were between 2 and 10 years old, 95 between 10 and 16 years old, 142 were more than 60-years-old, 316 were females and five were Catholic priests.
