Memorial Grieving Parents Vladslo

On the German War Cemetery in Vladslo is the monument "Grieving Parents" by the German artist Käthe Kollwitz in memory to her son Peter Kollwitz. He died in the First World War.

Käthe and her husband Karl's son, Peter Kollwitz, had volunteered for service at the outbreak of the First World War and he died at Esen on the night of 23 to 24 October 1914 and was buried there by his comrades. His parents did not learn the news until a month later.
Käthe Kollwitz made a memorial for her son and it was placed in the German cemetery at Roggeveld near Esen, where Peter Kollwitz was buried. In 1956 this cemetery was cleared and the monument, together with the remains of Peter Kollwitz, was transferred to the German Cemetery in Vladslo.
