The stainless steel memorial in the inner court of the former synagogue commemorates 133 Jewish residents of Roermond who were murdered in the Holocaust, 1940-1945.
The text at the top of the plaque is in Dutch, then Hebrew.
'Mogen hun zielen opgenomen worden
In de bundel van het eeuwige leven.'
[May their souls be included
in the bundle of eternal life.]
The choice of stainless steel comes from the idea that 'the names will not perish'. The two columns symbolize the temple columns Boaz and Jachin, with their reference to new life. The plaque includes the laser-inscribed names of the 133 Jewish war victims.
The monument was designed by the artist Appie Drielsma and unveiled on 1 May 2007.
The former synagogue is very few times open to the public. The memorial is not visible from the street.
