The monument on the Wadden Sea dyke between Ternaard and Holwerd was erected in memory of five Allied pilots of the Royal Air Force who died here on 26 June 1943. Their Wellington bomber HE 346 of the 166th squadron was shot down by an occupying night fighter and crashed into the Wadden, just north of Holwerd.
The names of the five soldiers killed are:
J. Ball, C.A. Mattress, A. Mortimer, N.R. Parry and J.P. Priestley.
Experts were long under the impression that the crashed plane had come down in the IJsselmeer. Intensive research by the Royal Air Force and some private individuals eventually led to the conclusion that the wreck of the Wellington was in the Wadden near Holwerd.
The marker on the map indicates the location of the memorial. The crash location exactly is actually at 53.392042, 5.951115.
