The farm Hougoumont was located on a special position. Before the battle commenced, Wellington had given the order to occupy this farm and to retain it at all cost. The first French attacks were therefore aimed at conquering the farm. During the day, several attacks took place on this farm. The Allies were able to hold on to the farm, but suffered great losses.
To mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, four exhibition rooms were created inside the farm. These settings give an insight on the hand-to-hand fighting that took place on these grounds on 18 June 1815.
